We have made it through the first month of the year and now on to the second. This month I started off strong with a total of 5 books read! I read 3 books, 1 e-book and listened to 1 audio. My favorite from the list was the Union’s memoir, We’re Going To Need More Wine, and Isabel Allende’s A Long Petal from the Sea.
A Long Petal from the Sea by Isabel Allende: It’s the late 1930s, the civil war has started in Spain. General Franco and his Facists have overthrown the government forcing thousands to flee to the French borders. Pregnant young widow, Roser and Army doctor, Victor Dalmau are intertwined for life after his brother and Roser’s lover passes away during the war. In order to continue their life, the two marry (which neither of them want) and together they can start a life in Chile by the sponsorship by poet Pablo Neruda. 2,200 other refugees embark on the SS Winnipeg in search of a new life. Unfortunately, starting in a new continent has its trials and many tests to overcome. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)
The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo: The story is about a young shepherd boy from Andalusia, Spain who travels to the pyramids of Egypt to search for treasure. In his journey, he comes across many different people who help him in his quest. Along the way, he also come face many obstacles, but the story centers around following your dreams, listening to our hearts and fighting the negativity away. (⭐️⭐️⭐️.7)
We’re Going To Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union:Union shares with us her experience and life growing up in White suburbia as a black woman. Her experiences in Hollywood and the roles she’s taken upon, but most importantly, being a victim of sexual violence. Her memoir is raw, personal and real. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐.5)
Tweet Cute by Emma Lord: Pepper is the swim team captain, an overachiever and perfectionist. Her family owns a huge fast-food chain and managing the company’s Twitter account with her witty tweets. Secretly, her family is falling apart. Jack is the class clown, part of the swim team, help’s at the family’s deli and the shadow of his popular twin brother. Then Pepper’s company steals his grandma’s grill cheese recipe and the Twitter war begins. (⭐️⭐️⭐️)
This Train Is Being Held by Ismée Williams: Ballet dancer Isabelle Warren meets Dominican-American Alex Rosario on the 1 train. An encounter that sets them both on a three year span train ride. Alex battles his future with his father who wants him to go pro-baseball while he wants to go to college and be a poet. Isabel deals with her family, especially her mother and her tantrums. But the encounters on the train is what makes them strong. (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)
